a ‘non-White social environment for vendors to negotiate class and social differences,’ (Stewart, 2021)

INDOOR.SWAPMEET is a cultural reuse project sited in the annex of the historic Inglewood Marketplace. The project approaches the vacant space of a swap meet (historically used as a social environment for non-White vendors to navigate class and social inequity) as fertile ground for cultural and economic possibility.

Led by artist / curator Chris Emile, INDOOR.SWAPMEET hosts cultural programming in the vacant space, gesturing towards a new model for the intersection of art, commerce and cultural institutions. The project aims to define a new shape of cultural reuse in which unconventional occupation of commercial space can enable equitable prosperity for businesses and artists alike. We are eager to feed, commune, and share our vision with you for the future.
